The first compass ever was made during the Qin Dynasty. It was produced in 221-206 BC. The compass was made with lodestone. It was a iron-like material that they used because it aligns itself with a north and south direction thanks to the magnetic forces inside the Earths surface. This instrument was used to show which direction you were heading to just by holding it in your hand. The shape of the compass actually started off a square but was further changed to a circle as they found out that the cardinal points wouldn't line up correctly. This invention was a huge invention during the Qin dynasty because they are still used to this day and helped thousands of people get around.
